Getting a Driving License in Laos as a Foreigner: What You Should Know

If you are living in Laos—whether for work, long-term travel, or simply because you’ve fallen in love with the slow and peaceful way of life—having a local driving license can make your daily life much easier. Many foreigners don’t realize this, but yes, you can study, take the test, and apply for a Lao driving license. And honestly, the process is not as complicated as many people think.

In Laos, driving schools in Vientiane and major provinces offer classes specifically designed for both locals and foreigners. Most schools provide basic driving lessons, traffic rules, and hands-on practice. If you already have experience driving, the whole process can feel very smooth—you mainly need to prepare the right documents and follow the steps at the Department of Public Works and Transport (DPWT).

Foreigners who stay in Laos for longer periods (for example, with a work permit, business visa, student visa, or marriage visa) are encouraged to convert or apply for a Lao driving license. It’s accepted nationwide, and having one makes dealing with traffic police and checkpoints so much easier. You don’t need to worry about international permit renewals or carrying extra documents everywhere you go.

You can attend driving courses at registered driving schools such as DRIVING SCHOOL DONKHOY, Dongdok Driving Center, or smaller training centers depending on where you live. These schools usually help explain the process, prepare you for the written test, and give you practical training on their driving tracks. The instructors speak Lao, but many are used to working with foreigners, and some can explain in simple English if needed.

The process usually involves: learning basic rules, taking a written test, doing a driving test, and then submitting your documents at the DPWT office. If you already have a valid foreign driving license, you may even be able to convert it directly without a full course—this depends on your visa type and the country of your license. Many expats find this option easier because it saves time.

When preparing your documents, make sure to bring your passport, visa, residency certificate, and photos. Some schools or offices also request a medical check, but it’s quick—usually done at a nearby clinic. Don’t worry too much; locals do this all the time, so the process is quite friendly.

One thing to keep in mind: Lao traffic can feel a bit chaotic if you’re new here. So even if you’re an experienced driver, taking a few practice lessons can help you understand local driving habits—from motorbikes weaving through lanes to unexpected stops and slow drivers ahead. Think of it as getting used to the rhythm of the road here.

If you decide to go for it, the best time to start is simply whenever you are ready. Visit a driving school, ask a few questions, book a lesson, and see how you feel. Most expats say getting a Lao driving license makes their life easier, safer, and more convenient. Plus, once you understand the system, you can travel around the country with confidence—from city streets to peaceful countryside roads.

So if you’re staying in Laos and want the freedom to drive your own car or motorbike, why not? You absolutely can get your license here. Treat it as part of your experience living in Laos—practical, simple, and a little adventure of its own.
