Elephant Festival Set to Return to Xayabouly in February

XAYABOULY, LAOS — Xayabouly province is preparing to host its annual Elephant Festival next month, with around 50 elephants expected to take part in the week-long event celebrating Laos’ long-standing relationship with its national animal.

The festival will be held in Xayabouly district from February 9 to 16, bringing together elephant handlers, local communities, and visitors from across the country and abroad. Activities are expected to take place across several days, allowing attendees to experience the event at a relaxed pace.

Xayabouly is known as one of Laos’ most important areas for elephant conservation, and the festival is intended to promote awareness of elephant welfare and responsible tourism. Alongside elephant-related activities, visitors can expect cultural performances, traditional ceremonies, local food, and handicraft stalls, reflecting the province’s strong community traditions.

Local authorities say the festival also plays an important role in supporting livelihoods for mahouts and rural communities, while encouraging visitors to engage with elephants in respectful and non-exploitative ways.

The Elephant Festival has become a key annual event on the province’s cultural calendar and continues to attract growing interest from travelers seeking meaningful experiences beyond major tourist centres.

Visitors planning to attend are advised to make travel and accommodation arrangements in advance, as the event period is expected to draw increased numbers of domestic and international visitors to Xayabouly province.
