Weekend in Vang Vieng: Don’t Miss Roti and Lao-Style Grilled Chicken

Food & Drink . Local Cuisine . Street Food Article

VANG VIENG, Laos — Travelers planning a weekend trip to Vang Vieng should not miss one of the town’s simple but memorable food experiences: enjoying freshly made roti and traditional Lao-style grilled chicken at local street food stalls.

Vang Vieng is well known for its dramatic limestone mountains, river activities, and relaxed atmosphere. But beyond the scenery, the town’s street food culture is also a highlight for visitors exploring the area during the weekend.

One of the most popular snacks among travelers is roti, a thin, crispy pancake cooked on a hot griddle and often served with banana, chocolate, or condensed milk. It is a favorite evening treat for many visitors walking around the town center.

Another must-try dish is Lao grilled chicken, locally known as Ping Kai. The chicken is marinated with garlic, fish sauce, herbs, and local spices before being grilled slowly over charcoal. This traditional Lao grilling method gives the chicken a smoky flavor and crispy skin while keeping the meat tender inside.

Many street food stalls in Vang Vieng serve grilled chicken together with sticky rice and dipping sauces, creating a simple but delicious local meal.

Visitors who are not used to strong Lao flavors should know that some dishes may include fermented fish sauce (padaek) or spicy seasoning. If you prefer a milder taste, it is perfectly acceptable to tell the vendor:

  • “No padaek, please.” Bor sai padeak
  • “Not spicy, please.” Bor pet

Local vendors are usually happy to adjust the flavor according to customers’ preferences.

For travelers spending a weekend in Vang Vieng, trying local street food is part of the experience. Walking through the small streets in the evening, enjoying roti and grilled chicken while watching the lively atmosphere of the town, is a simple way to enjoy the local culture.

Laos Travel Hub recommends adding this food stop to your weekend plans while exploring the beautiful landscapes of Vang Vieng.
