Besides shopping, the area around the Luang Prabang Night Market is also well known for its street food section, located in the small alleys next to the market street. In the evening, these lanes fill with food stalls offering affordable Lao dishes, grilled snacks, and local desserts.

Many visitors come here not only to shop but also to enjoy a casual dinner while exploring the lively atmosphere of Luang Prabang.

Food is generally very affordable, and visitors can find a variety of dishes ranging from traditional Lao cuisine to simple Asian street food.

Typical options include:

  • Grilled meat skewers (chicken, pork, or fish)
  • Fried rice and noodle dishes
  • Spring rolls and fried snacks
  • Fresh fruit shakes and juices
  • Coconut pancakes and local sweets
  • Vegetarian buffet dishes (very popular among travelers)

One of the most famous options is the vegetarian buffet, where visitors can fill a bowl with different dishes for a fixed price, usually around 15,000–30,000 LAK.

Lao Foods You Should Try at the Night Market

If you want to experience authentic Lao flavors, there are several traditional foods worth trying when visiting the night market.

Laap (Larb)
A traditional Lao salad made with minced meat, herbs, lime juice, and roasted rice powder. It is considered the national dish of Laos.

Khao Jee (Lao Baguette Sandwich)
A popular street food made with a crispy baguette filled with meat, vegetables, herbs, and sauces. It reflects the French influence in Lao cuisine.

Ping Pa (Grilled Mekong Fish)
Fresh fish grilled with salt and herbs, often served with sticky rice and spicy dipping sauce.

Khao Niew (Sticky Rice)
Sticky rice is the staple food of Laos and is usually served in a small bamboo basket. It is eaten with almost every meal.

Lao Desserts
Visitors can also try traditional sweets such as coconut pancakes, banana fritters, and sticky rice desserts.

Food Tip for Visitors

  • Food is generally safe when cooked fresh and served hot.
  • Choose stalls with many customers, as this usually means the food is fresh.
  • Carry small cash for easier payment.

Exploring the food stalls at the night market is one of the easiest ways for visitors to experience the rich flavors of Lao cuisine while enjoying the relaxed evening atmosphere of Luang Prabang.
