Wat Phou Champasak Festival 2026 to Be Held in Grand Celebration

City Guides . Cultural Events . Events & Activities Article

The annual Wat Phou Champasak Festival 2026 will be held on a grand scale from 31 January to 2 February 2026 at Wat Phou Champasak, one of Laos’ most important historical and spiritual sites. The official opening ceremony is scheduled for the evening of 31 January 2026.

This year’s festival is especially significant as it marks the 25th anniversary of Wat Phou Champasak being officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The event is expected to attract a large number of visitors, including local residents, domestic tourists, and international travelers.

Highlights of the 2026 Festival

The festival will feature a wide range of cultural, religious, and recreational activities, including:

  • A grand opening ceremony with a light, color, and sound show depicting the history and construction of Wat Phou
  • A spectacular drone performance using 590 drones, combined with a fireworks display of 250 fireworks
  • Exhibition and sales booths showcasing local products and handicrafts
  • Traditional local sports competitions
  • Cultural and musical performances
  • Opportunities to enjoy local Champasak cuisine, including regional specialties
  • A scientific seminar and conference marking 25 years of Wat Phou’s World Heritage status

Religious Ceremonies

Religious activities will also play a central role in the festival. On the evening of 1 February 2026, participants can join Buddhist ceremonies, listen to Dharma teachings, and take part in overnight chanting rituals. On the morning of 2 February 2026, starting from 7:00 a.m., there will be a large-scale almsgiving ceremony, where offerings will be made to hundreds of monks. In the evening, a candlelight procession will be held in observance of Makha Bucha Day.

The Wat Phou Champasak Festival 2026 not only celebrates Laos’ rich cultural and spiritual heritage but also highlights the enduring value of Wat Phou as a symbol of national pride and a site of global importance.
