Lao New Year (Pi Mai Lao) 2026: Get Ready for the Biggest Water Festival in Laos

Cultural Events . Events & Activities . Local Holidays Article

LAOS — One of the most exciting times to visit Laos is during the Lao New Year, known locally as Pi Mai Lao. The festival marks the traditional New Year and usually takes place every year from April 14 to April 16, although celebrations in many places can last several days longer.

In 2026, the main Pi Mai Lao celebration is expected to take place from April 14–16, with many businesses and government offices closing for the holiday period. During these days, the entire country transforms into a lively celebration filled with water, music, traditional ceremonies, and community gatherings.

For travelers, Pi Mai Lao is not just a festival—it is one of the most vibrant cultural experiences in Laos.

During the festival, people celebrate by splashing water on each other, symbolizing the washing away of bad luck and welcoming a fresh start for the new year. Streets in many towns become lively water-splashing zones where locals and visitors join the fun together.

The celebrations are particularly famous in northern destinations such as Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng, where traditional ceremonies mix with modern festival energy.

In Luang Prabang, visitors can witness beautiful cultural events including temple ceremonies, traditional parades, and the symbolic bathing of Buddha statues. Local people also build small sand stupas at temples and make offerings to monks as part of the New Year traditions. At the same time, many streets turn into joyful water-throwing celebrations where people use buckets, water guns, and hoses to splash water on passing friends and travelers.

The atmosphere can be both spiritual and festive. During the daytime, temples are filled with religious activities, while the streets are alive with music, dancing, and water fights.

Travelers who visit Laos during Pi Mai Lao should prepare for a very different travel experience compared with normal days. Many people wear colorful shirts, carry water guns, and celebrate outdoors for most of the day.

Visitors planning to join the celebration are advised to prepare a few simple things: wear light clothing that can get wet, protect mobile phones and cameras in waterproof bags, and carry some cash since many shops may close for the holiday. It is also important to show respect during religious ceremonies at temples by dressing modestly and behaving appropriately.

Despite the water fights and lively atmosphere, Pi Mai Lao remains deeply connected to Lao culture and spirituality. The festival celebrates renewal, community, and good fortune for the coming year.

For travelers who enjoy festivals and cultural celebrations, visiting Laos during Pi Mai Lao can be an unforgettable experience. Whether joining the water celebrations in the streets or observing traditional ceremonies at temples, the Lao New Year offers a unique glimpse into the heart of Lao culture.
