How to Travel from Vientiane to Udon Thani or Nong Khai

Car Rentals . Events & Activities . Expat Life . Getting Around . Public Transport . Visa Requirements Article

Traveling from Vientiane, the capital of Laos, to nearby Thai cities like Nong Khai and Udon Thani is a popular and surprisingly simple journey—especially for foreign visitors who want to explore both countries. Although there are no direct flights between Vientiane and these cities, several convenient overland options are available.

Bus ticket
Thai-Lao International Bus

By Local Bus:
This is one of the most affordable and common ways to travel. Buses from Vientiane’s central bus station regularly depart for Nong Khai and Udon Thani. The trip usually takes about 1 hour to Nong Khai and 2 to 2.5 hours to Udon Thani, depending on border traffic. These buses will stop at the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge for immigration procedures. Once passengers have cleared both Lao and Thai immigration, they re-board the same bus on the Thai side.

By Private Car or Minivan:
Traveling by private car or minivan is a very comfortable and flexible option—especially for those traveling in groups or with luggage. The drive from Vientiane to Nong Khai takes around 45 minutes, and to Udon Thani, about 90 minutes. The route is smooth and safe, passing through the Friendship Bridge and two immigration checkpoints. For foreign nationals who are not Lao or Thai, only a valid passport is required to cross the border. No visa is needed for many nationalities if visiting Thailand for a short stay.

Important Tips for Border Crossing:
Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months. Immigration at the Friendship Bridge is well organized and foreigner-friendly. Visa exemptions depend on your nationality, so it’s best to check in advance. If you’re unsure, many travel agents in Vientiane can assist with up-to-date information.

Whether you’re heading to Udon for shopping, catching a flight, or simply enjoying a day trip to Nong Khai’s riverside market, the journey is easy, scenic, and worth taking.
