How to Travel from Laos to Vietnam in 2026

Planning to continue your Southeast Asia trip from Laos to Vietnam? The good news is that travelling between the two countries is relatively straightforward.

Laos and Vietnam share a long land border, and travelers can choose between direct flights, international sleeper buses and overland border crossings.

The best option depends mainly on where you are starting in Laos and where you want to go in Vietnam.

✈️ Easiest Option: Fly from Vientiane to Hanoi

For most travelers, the easiest way to travel from Laos to Vietnam is to fly from Vientiane to Hanoi.

Direct flights connect the two capitals, making this a particularly convenient option for families, travelers with limited time, or anyone who would rather avoid a long overnight bus journey.

If your holiday is short, flying can save almost an entire day of travel.

Best for: Convenience, families and short trips.

✈️ Luang Prabang to Hanoi

If you are travelling through northern Laos, another excellent option is to fly directly from Luang Prabang to Hanoi.

This makes it possible to create a very easy multi-country itinerary:

Vientiane → Vang Vieng → Luang Prabang → Hanoi

Travel through Laos using the Laos–China Railway, spend a few days enjoying Luang Prabang, and then continue directly to northern Vietnam by air.

For first-time visitors to both countries, this is one of the routes we recommend most.

🚌 Vientiane to Hanoi by Sleeper Bus

Want an overland adventure?

International sleeper buses operate between Vientiane and Hanoi, normally travelling through the mountainous border region between Laos and Vietnam.

The complete journey can take around 20–24 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions and immigration procedures.

It is a long trip, but it remains popular among backpackers and budget travelers.

Bring water, snacks, a power bank, warm clothing for the air-conditioning and keep your passport and visa documents somewhere easy to access.

Best for: Backpackers and budget travelers.

🚌 Savannakhet to Hue or Da Nang

Travelers already in central Laos do not necessarily need to return to Vientiane.

From Savannakhet, overland connections toward central Vietnam can take travelers through the Dansavanh–Lao Bao international border crossing.

This route can be particularly useful if your next destinations are:

Hue → Da Nang → Hoi An

Instead of travelling north to Hanoi first, you can enter Vietnam much closer to its central coast.

🌴 Travelling from Southern Laos

If you are finishing your Laos journey around Pakse, Champasak, the Bolaven Plateau or the 4,000 Islands, overland travel toward Vietnam is also possible.

However, connections can be less straightforward than from Vientiane.

Before travelling, check the current bus route, border crossing and whether your Vietnamese visa permits entry through that particular checkpoint.

Sometimes returning to Pakse or Vientiane and flying may be worth the extra cost, especially if you are travelling with children or carrying a lot of luggage.

🛂 Check Your Vietnam Visa Before You Travel

This is one of the most important things to organize before crossing the border.

Vietnamese visa requirements depend on your nationality and passport.

If you are travelling with an e-visa, make sure the border crossing you intend to use is an approved entry point.

Common international crossings between Laos and Vietnam include:

When booking an international bus, ask the operator which border crossing the bus uses before purchasing your ticket.

Although Laos and Vietnam are developing plans for a future railway connection, there is currently no direct passenger train between the two countries.

For now, tourists travelling from Laos to Vietnam should choose between air travel and road travel.

Start with temples and Mekong life in Vientiane, take the railway through the mountains to Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang, and then continue into Vietnam for Hanoi, limestone landscapes and Ha Long Bay.

One Journey, Two Very Different Countries

Travelling from Laos to Vietnam can be much more than simply moving from one destination to another.

Choose a flight if you want to arrive quickly.

Choose the sleeper bus if you want an adventure.

And if you are travelling slowly through Southeast Asia, consider planning your route around the border rather than automatically returning to a capital city.
