Bridge Location

  • Lao side: Bolikhamxay Province (near Paksan District)
  • Thai side: Bueng Kan Province

The bridge crosses the Mekong River and links Paksan (Laos) with Bueng Kan (Thailand), creating a new and efficient route between the two countries.

How to Travel from Vientiane Capital to the Bridge

Distance: approximately 150–170 km
Travel time: around 3–4 hours (depending on traffic and road conditions)

Option 1: Private Car or Taxi

  • Drive northeast from Vientiane Capital toward Paksan, Bolikhamxay Province
  • Follow national roads connecting Vientiane → Paksan
  • This is the most convenient option for families and groups

Option 2: Bus or Minivan

  • Take a bus or minivan from Vientiane’s bus stations to Paksan
  • From Paksan town, local transport (tuk-tuk or taxi) can take you to the bridge and border checkpoint

Crossing the Border

  • The bridge supports international border crossing
  • Travelers must pass through immigration and customs checkpoints on both sides
  • Passports, visas (if required), and vehicle documents are checked according to Lao and Thai regulations

Travelers are advised to:

  • Check visa requirements in advance
  • Confirm border opening hours
  • Carry valid travel and vehicle documents

Why This Bridge Matters for Travelers

  • Shortens travel routes between central Laos and northeastern Thailand
  • Opens new overland travel options for road trips and regional tourism
  • Improves access to emerging destinations in Bolikhamxay and Bueng Kan

The Lao–Thai Friendship Bridge No. 5 is expected to play an important role in expanding tourism, logistics, and people-to-people exchange between Laos and Thailand.
