Important Traffic Update in Vientiane: New One-Way and Two-Way Road Changes on 9 City Routes

Uncategorized Article

Travelers visiting Vientiane should be aware of a recent announcement from the city authorities regarding changes to the traffic flow on nine major roads in the capital. These adjustments are part of the city’s effort to improve transportation, reduce congestion, and make the city center easier and safer to navigate.

The updates are being implemented under the Vientiane Urban Sustainable Transport Project (VUSTP), and will involve both one-way and two-way conversions on key roads around the downtown area.

Which Roads Are Affected?

The following major roads will see changes in their traffic direction:

  • Chao Fa Ngum Road – Converted into a one-way road (inbound direction)
  • Sithan Road – Converted into a one-way road (outbound direction)
  • Khounboulom Road – Changed to a one-way road (inbound direction)
  • Rue Françoise d’Aubigné – Reopened as a two-way road
  • Nokeokoummane Road – Now two-way
  • Manthatourath Road – Now two-way
  • Road in front of the French Embassy – Changed to two-way traffic
  • Plus two additional connecting roads that will support the new traffic system

These adjustments aim to create a smoother, more predictable traffic flow in busy areas—especially near the riverside, the city center, and popular tourist spots.

When Will the Changes Start?

The exact starting date will be announced once all road markings, lane arrows, and new traffic signs are completely installed.
During the transition period, traffic police will assist with guiding drivers and ensuring safety.

What Tourists Need to Know

If you are visiting Vientiane or planning to drive, rent a car, or use a motorbike, here are some important tips:

  • Watch for new traffic signs and arrows, especially in the city center
  • Navigation apps may not be updated immediately—use extra caution
  • Allow a little extra travel time during the adjustment period
  • Follow directions from traffic police stationed at key intersections
  • If unsure, slow down and double-check the road markings

These changes are designed to make driving in Vientiane more efficient and safer in the long run.

A Better Travel Experience Ahead

With these improvements, visitors can expect a more organized and smoother travel experience around Vientiane. Whether you’re exploring the Mekong Riverside, visiting temples, or navigating popular spots like the Night Market, these updates will help make your journey easier.

LaosTravelHub will continue sharing updates to help you travel safely and comfortably in Laos.
